If you think about braces, your mind directly goes to the metallic brackets and wires, and colorful round elastics. But braces are so much more than that. Braces (also known as orthodontics) is the art and science of moving and aligning teeth. There is a lot to know about braces before you decide to take the leap. Here, we attempt to explain all you should know about braces, and who is the best provider of braces Freehold NJ has to offer.
Who are braces for?
Braces are mainly for people with problems with their teeth alignment, including:
-
Crowding:
Where the jaw size is too small for the teeth. This means they have nowhere to go, and end up crowding each other for space.
-
Spacing:
The opposite of crowding. When the jaw size is too big for the teeth, so they end up set far apart from each other.
-
Overbite:
When your upper teeth are too tall, so they cover the entire surface of the lower teeth. In some cases they can even injure the gums and lips.
-
Underbite:
The opposite of overbite. When your upper and lower front teeth are far apart even when you are biting down on your back teeth.
-
Jaw size mismatch:
When your upper jaw is larger than your lower jaw, or vice versa. In some cases, braces are coupled with correctional jaw surgery for the greatest results.
How do braces work?
There are generally 2 types of braces: Fixed and removable (aka Invisalign).
Fixed braces include the traditional metallic braces, clear braces, and lingual braces. They all work in the same manner, only differ in appearance. The brackets are attached to the surface of the teeth, and a wire crosses over these brackets. The wire is connected to the brackets through a series of round elastic bands, often of many colors. The entire assembly applies a pulling motion to move the teeth where we need them.
Invisalign is a different matter entirely. There are no brackets or wires. Instead, these are replaced by plastic molds known as aligners. These are not attached to the surface of the teeth, but rather fit over the outer surface. They are manufactured in a specific manner to apply pressure to the teeth, and they begin to move.

Which type is best?
Each type of braces has its merits and drawbacks. It is up to you to choose the type that suits you best.
Fixed type braces are generally easier to apply, and they give complete control to the orthodontist for tweaks and modifications. However, they are generally uncomfortable as they cut and scrape against the gums and lips, not to mention the awful appearance of traditional metallic braces.
Invisalign (or removable braces) is better looking, more comfortable, and quite faster than traditional braces. It is also computer made so highly accurate. However, it is quite costly, and so not suitable for everyone.
