Braces have been around for generations. They are the only way to correct crooked teeth, crowded teeth, gapped teeth, or any other problem related to teeth arrangement. However, for as long as braces have been around, they have always had the same problems. Patients always complain of the same things when it comes to braces. These complaints include their appearance, how uncomfortable they are, and how long they take to actually do any effect. To solve these problems, a number of more esthetic braces options have recently emerged. So the question today is not whether if you should get braces or not, but rather which option is best for you. Well .. we’re here to cross one off your list: Braces vs Invisalign: Which type is best for you?
What don’t people like about braces?
-
Appearance:
The way braces look has always been and always will be their biggest disadvantage. The combination of metal brackets, wires and colorful elastics make for a ghastly appearance. Most people – especially adults – would defer from treatment altogether just because of how they would look during that treatment period.
-
Comfort:
Again due to the nature and construction of metal braces. They have sharp metallic edges, and more than likely to cut and scrape against the gums, lips and cheeks.
-
Treatment period:
On average, braces take from 6 months to 2 years to complete. Compared to other dental procedures like fillings, root canals and crowns, braces are by far the longest lasting procedure. Add to that the fact that you would be required to visit the orthodontist numerous times, and you understand why people don’t like braces.
What are the other available options?
-
Clear braces:
They use the same principles as metal braces. However, the brackets are made of a clear ceramic material, making the appearance far better.
-
Lingual braces:
Solved the appearance problem altogether. This type of braces goes on the inner rather than the outer surface of the teeth. They are quite invisible, but also quite uncomfortable since they irritate the tongue.
-
Invisalign:
Possibly the solution to every problem related to braces. No more brackets, wires or elastics. Invisalign is a system of transparent plastic molds known as aligners. These are placed on the outer surface of the teeth, applying pressure and moving the teeth where we need them to.

What is so great about Invisalign?
It has a solution to every one of the abovementioned problems, and then some.
-
Appearance:
They are practically invisible, even when worn. Plus, you can remove them at will. Safe to say that their appearance is more than acceptable.
-
Comfort:
Nothing is attached to your teeth. So nothing to cut and injure the soft tissues.
-
Treatment period:
The aligners are designed through a specialized computer program. This makes them a lot faster and a lot more accurate compared to braces.
-
Oral hygiene:
Brushing with braces is difficult, and flossing is impossible. No more with the removable aligners.
What we recommend when it comes to braces vs Invisalign
It seems like Invisalign has the advantage over braces in every way. But don’t count braces out just yet. They are an easy, reliable and more importantly affordable option. They can also treat every case, unlike Invisalign which has a few limitations. The choice is yours.
